Open with QuickTime Player Pro and export as fast start QuickTime VR, making sure that the "Create Preview" checkbox is checked. This option is available for the Macintosh and Windows.

For higher res panos, you may want to also subtile the faces, so that the visible ones come in faster. You can do this by opening the pano from within MakeCubic (don't drag it onto MakeCubic), and setting the tiling appropriately; since this will do compression again, you'd be best off by starting with a minimally compressed pano, deferring the compression until MakeCubic gets ahold of it.

MakeCubic also has a continuum of resolution choices for the preview, rather than simply the 1/2 and 1/4 offered by the QuickTime Export. I prefer low resolution (0.5-1.0 pixels per degree) with higher quality (65-75%), resulting in a blurry preview without compression artifacts.

You can get MakeCubic for the Macintosh from the Apple web site. Unfortunately it is not available for Windows.
