Re: quicktime-vr digest, Vol 3 #615 - 14 msgs

Olympus OM-1(n)
Pentax K1000
Pentax MX
Nikon FM
Nikon FM-2
Nikon FM-3A (new camera)

Does anyone have any opinions on these cameras, reasons to buy or not
to buy particular models, other models not mentioned here that I
should consider, etc.?

Although I am now using mostly digital 2Mpixel cameras for CD and webwork, I
still own an MX and have owned numerous Pentax K-series cameras. They are
rugged, totally mechanical (minus the battery-driven metering) and sturdy
enough to be dropped in a creek and dried and cleaned and still work. The
MX and K series take the Pentax bayonet mount lenses - which are optically
the equivalent of all but the top-line Nikkor and Canon FL series lenses.
Pentax lenses can be purchased used also and hold up incredibly well over
time - the older ones especially have the brass-aluminum helical mount which
provides metal-to-metal lubrication and which works fine in very cold
temperatures. I used these lenses in Central Pennsylvania in the winter for
outside and snow shots and the camera and lens mechanicals worked fine - the
metering battery did, of course, experience cold problems but then I used a
separate handheld light meter which I kept in my inside coat pocket.

The Olympus should be the same as the Pentax, have no experience with Nikon
mechanicals. An older Canon FTB might also be a good choice with some of
the older, pre-FL, Canon lenses, which should also be reasonably priced on
the used market.
