Re: Fuji S2 & Sigma 8mm Photoshop Action

Eric-

These shots were taken at 1/3 second @ f8; ISO 100.

The JPGs straight from the camera are not tack sharp - with the Sigma 8mm. They can, however, be made to look great with proper sharpening. I assume better results would come with RAW files, but I haven't gone there too much. I generally stay around 5.6-8. I did a focus/sharpness test using 4, 5.6, 8, & 11 and didn't notice much difference between the different apertures.

This is definitely not the lens to judge the camera by, though. For all it's quirks, I think the S2 is simply fantastic.

Wouldn't I prefer a Nikkor 8mm/2.8? Sure, but for $450 the Sigma is a lot more realistic and definitely gets the job done. You only need to look at the high-res Sigma samples at panoramas.dk to be sure of that.

I have been considering a Fuji S2 & Sigma 8mm.

What aperture / ISO/ shutter are you using for the pictures you posted? Are
you satisfied
with the sharpness of the images? Do they get much more blurry when you use
wider
aperture? I am curious how good the Sigma 8mm is. I think Jook uses Fuji S2
with Nikon 8mm
(perhaps not a fair comparison). Is it true that when you stop down the
aperture, you get the
sharpest images? Newbie questions, I know...

Subject: Fuji S2 & Sigma 8mm Photoshop Action

I made a custom Photoshop action which takes 6 images shot with the
Fuji S2 & Sigma 8mm Fisheye Lens and turns them into an
Equirectangular image using the Panorama Tools PS plug-in.

I am far from an expert in the mysterious ways of PTools, but I
wanted to share this with the lists. After all, everything I know is
from these lists and the links to which they lead. Of course, because
I don't understand PTools that well, I could very well be duplicating
features which are already in PTools but which I don't know how to
 use. We'll see.

There are links to sample images which can be used with the action,
in case anyone without the above-mentioned camera/lens combination in
their toolkit wants to play with it.

If anyone out there is using this gear for cubic panos, I would love
to hear about your methodology and the extent to which you are able
to approach perfection in your automated stitching.

 Hardware and shooting summary:
Sigma 8mm AF Fisheye lens on Fuji S2 body mounted on Kaidan QPIII Pro
Bracket.
 Camera set to 3024.
Six images at 60 degrees in one row.
