I suppose by removing the casing you don't get directly to the optics so there shouldn't be fear for damage

anyway, go to a computer shop and buy a dust-blowing spray (just pressured air) and try that

else (always with batteries taken out) open the camera and (after blowing) try cleaning the button's contacts with a non-hairy cloth damped in pure alcohol (don't use too much though). Let it dry a bit, then reassemble, place batteries and try again
