Bah (was Re: Disppointed about G5s)

It's very easy to get into the reactive trashing of Apple; it happens just after every conference. I would suggest you all look more deeply into the issues, and the players - for instance, Haxial.com, hardly known as an unbiased third-party. Apple has made a clear statement providing details of their decision making process and published their entire testing process; I've yet to see anyone dispute the facts on any basis aside from Haxial's opinion, which has been debated quite a bit and is far from accepted as a faithful explanation. From Apple's statements, and other informed opinions around the Web, it seems at very least this was blown way out of proportion, and more likely Haxial's claims were just wrong and Apple's tests were exactly as they reported (and documented) them. But then that doesn't make interesting press, and retractions never get the prominence of the original flawed information.

To summarize - for all of the major technical exceptions Haxial pointed out, Apple responds that they tested the alternative, it scored slower, and they awarded Intel the better of the possible scores. And using a common compiler - one far more optimized for x86 in fact - normalized the test as much as possible; both sides could have used better compilers, but then they would not have been doing a direct comparison.

Until someone refutes these statements from Apple - which have been generally received as reasonable on developer's lists I'm on - I consider this a stupid wildfire set by an obnoxious and uninformed partisan (he has always come off as much a fanatic as those he rails against). That it got so much coverage based on such a thin veneer just speaks to the quality of much of the online media.

I'm not jumping in to this to profess my undying love for Apple. But the speed at which this has been parroted all over the map is annoying enough to make me want to at least respond with an alternate perspective, supported by a senior Apple executive. This is the last you'll hear from me on this, back to VR :)
