On VRlog.com today, I posted a note about the news of the Pixlet
codec providing
display of 48 bit content.

Wouldn't it be great if this helps lay the groundwork for Apple to provide
viewing of HDR panoramas with QuickTime?

It's my understanding that the 48 bit content provides merely more precision, NOT more dynamic range. HDR (i.e. High Dynamic Range) images need the wider dynamic range, not necessarily the precision. In fact Greg Ward's 32-bit block floating point format (used in Radiance, HDRshop, and others) probably does a much better job with HDR images than a 48 bit fixed point codec.
