Luckily you can create your own previews in PhotoShop and add it in
QuickTime Player.

This was news to me so I tried to make it myself on photoshop. I'll list my step as I am not sure I'm doing the right thing:ened them in

1- I got my equirectangular jpeg...

What am I doing wrong?

You add the preview when you File>Export as ... fast start QuickTime VR, then hit the options button. I know it will take an image, but it may also take a movie file (sequence of images).

QuickTime Player works well for cylindrical panoramas, but I'm not sure about cubics; you'll have to check it out. MakeCubic is the best for creating cubics with previews, though.
