Just FYI, I don't have an answer to your general question, but you don't need the scale attribute for QTVR - it will always maintain the appropriate aspect ratio for your image regardless of the aspect ratio of the plugin view.
Don't know why this isn't working in IE though. Does it work without the scale attribute?
