Fun in the sun and PTGUI for Mac

Title: Fun in the sun and PTGUI for Mac
I’ve now put five of the panos from my recent trip to Barbados on a separate page <http://www.bhphoto.biz/cropover/> - scrappy bit of work but I did it in a hurry.  My commission was for stills only so these were a bit of an experiment – first hand helds and first time using a Sigma 8mm on my EOS 5D.

My return coincided with the release of PTGUI for Mac and after I had stitched the first hand held I thought that I had found the magic bullet – but unfortunately that’s not quite the case.  I found it relatively easy to start straightaway with PTGUI as it has many similarities to PTMac but so far I’m sure that I haven’t exploited all it has to offer.  First impressions are that it will find auto control points on circular FE lens far better than PTMac ( which fails almost completely in this area) but that it was not significantly better than PTMac on full frame FE’s and in one instance fell down completely when PTMac had no problem with the same source images.  I found it harder to manually set cp’s in PTGUI, although I did like the way that it locked the two images together once cp’s were active.  The level tool has its uses but is not infallible, though I do like the way that the panorama editor works to adjust level etc. I don’t like the way the blending works and got some very nasty ghosted results and found that best results came from outputting as straight layers and then blending in Xblend.  Overall I would say that it does seem to be slightly faster in operation than PTMac.  The interface is not attractive to a Mac user with horrible looking icons but this is only a beta of course.

I’m using a G5 Imac 1.8 ghz with 1.25 gig of RAM on OS 10.3.9 and only got PTGUI to work after Joost sent me a pt bundle specific to that OS – I think others are having the same problem.  It will be interesting to see how the final release performs – that will probably be 10.4 only as I understand it.  Having heard so many PC users rave about PTGUI’s ability to auto select cp’s I was really looking forward to trying it out and so far it has been impressive – especially with the hand held shots on the Sigma 8mm. I’m not about to switch from PTMac full time though as it is still the easiest overall with a clarity of design that is lacking in PTGUI, it has the best forum for queries and technical help and Kevin is one of my heroes, for I wouldn’t have achieved anything like the success that I have had making panos without his advice and assistance.

Hope that this is of interest to anyone thinking about trying PTGUi – I’ll happily expand further off list if anyone wants to contact me.
