If you already have a pano head and your primary impetus for getting
a second one is weight and transportability, I'd suggest considering
making one. If you're going to be using the same camera and lens
combo for most of your panos, you simply can't beat the ease,
simplicity, and weight of a homemade pano mount. Unless, you're
completely inept with tools and/or don't have the time to spend
making one, it's the way to go. Determining the precise measurements
for where to drill the holes was the tricky part for me since I had
no existing pano mount, but that should be easy for you since you can
just take measurements from your existing pano head. I made mine
from only a few dollars (probably less than $7 USD) worth of
materials. I used wood - a short piece of 1" x 2" hardwood and a
piece of 1/4" hardboard - plus an inexpensive spirit level, a 1/4" x
20tpi threaded insert (to attach the mount to the tripod) and a
couple 1/4" x 20tpi thumb screws. It's simple, quick to assemble and
disassemble, and yields great results. You can get ideas for what
materials to use and how to make one by searching the Web for
homemade pano mount.
