Of course, I can't help noticing the slight pixellation of the Flash-based panorama while it is being panned. Is this really an unavoidable 'feature' of using Flash?

No they are just unexperienced.

It looks like they have got a brand new NodalNinja 5.

The photographer is Fred Conrad a very expderienced photographer who has done panoramas before with Roundshot and the famous Hulcherama http://www.phototechmag.com/previous-articles/2002/ground-zero/ nathan.htm

However doing digital panoramas is something else and he is obviously not at all experienced in it.

Overexposed probably JPG which has been further destroyed by bad photoshop work is sad to see at a place like NYT.

THey recently also published some very bad flashpanoramas from some new building which was not horizontally aligned.
