if your hardware has a memory buffer preference, like the built in capture on many earlier Macs, or a PCI card or something, then yes, it will cause problems to try to use a GWorld not accessable to the hardware (ie: offscreen, wrong screen, etc)... but USB, FireWire and many PCI sources do not have this requirement.

but my thinking is it's just a plain "we got no current, valid gworld" thing inside QT not QTJ???

I'm just suggesting having a valid gworld for your preamble to making your video channel as a work around that is harmless enough (with consideration) and has worked for me in the past few months...
