Getting recorded sound data from memory

I'm working on an application that uses quicktime for java to record sound data. Right now, I'm saving the sound files to disc, but I'd like to eventually create a proprietary type file that saves the sound data into this file. I'm very new to quicktime, so this has been a bit of a struggle for me. I've successfully used the SndHandle and SPB to record data and play it back, but I can't seem to be able to extract the raw data from memory, and save it into a byte array. I've looked though the documentation, and it seems that I should be able to do this with QTPointerRef, but I'm not getting the correct information returned. If someone could provide some insight into my problem, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Chris
