de-interlace

Does anyone know if it is possible to de-interlace a movie with QT4J? Not exactly sure how to even go about this but generally I would like to detect if a movie is interlaced and if it is deinterlace it first and then encode it using mp4 h264.

It seems that the deinterlacing settings are not available when trying to transcode a movie to mp4 h264. but they are available if you are creating a mov that uses h.264. Strange. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Finally the reason I want to deinterlace is that h264 does not do a good job on interlaced content. So any approach that solves this problem is really what I am looking for!
