Just my 2 cents:

In my environment, we are required to have accurate systems clocks so that log times are accurate.

On some computers, Apple's default minpoll (12 => 2^12 or 4096 seconds) is not sufficient to accurately synchronize the clock in a reasonable amount of time. It will eventually sync, but only if the computer is on 24/7 for a good week.

I like to start with a minpoll of 6 (2^6 or 64 seconds) and reduce the maxpoll to 12, i.e.:

        server ns0 minpoll 6 maxpoll 12

The ntp daemon will automatically back off the update interval when the clock reaches a good accuracy.
