Re: Cell phone connection.

As the previous poster said, this probably isn't the answer that you're looking for, but I know - or have read descriptions of in various places on the net - many people who have successfully used a wide range of cellphones with their Macs for internet access. Almost all involve using the USB data cable, and then, it's not a matter of drivers, but more an issue of figuring out exactly how to connect. The best bet is to search for a combination of things like:

"os x" motorola v60
"os x" <name of your provider>

or combinations thereof, on things like Google or macosxhints.com. Examples:

http://www.macintouch.com/macphones.html
http://homepage.mac.com/jrc/contrib/mobile_office/

I can also say that people with Bluetooth phones (like the T608 from Sprint, or through carriers like T Mobile) successfully use their phone as an internet connection for Mac OS X.

Another place to ask or search is http://www.howardforums.com/ ...there are forums for phone manufacturers and wireless providers - try both Motorola and whoever your provider is.

While you may not find official "support" from the carrier, that doesn't mean it doesn't work. Often a little Google and other searching will get you the answer.

Dear members:

I have been quite disappointed lately with my attempts to connect my
Powerbook G4 to the internet using my cell phone.

My cell phone is a Motorola V60 and I purchase a special kit with a cable
and CD-ROM containing the installation software. The CD-ROM does not contain
software or drivers for the Macintosh. I have contacted Motorola and it
currently doesn9t offer Macintosh drivers for any of its cell phones.

After that I turned to Sony-Ericsson and Nokia and both their technical
support departments gave me the same answer: no drivers or software
available for the Macintosh.

Apple9s technical support department hasn9t been very helpful in this area
either.

Now that bluetooth-equipped phones are available would it be possible to
connect using some king of generic driver or protocol, or would I still need
a specific driver for my model of phone even if connecting the notebook to
the phone via bluetooth ? Is there any other source or company that provides
Macintosh OS X drivers for cell phones ?

What is your suggestion ?

Just as an addendum, I have also checked all major cell phone companies for
wireless network cards (such as the Sierra wireless PCMCIA) and none of them
support the Mac OS X.

Any ideas on how I can connect to the internet using a cell phone ? I am
willing to get a new phone since my Motorola V60 is equipped with an
internal mode that has a max connection speed of only 9.6 K.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Joseph Chamberlain, D.D.S.
