just to jump on this thread if i may.
i successfully connect my powerbook to the internet thru my cell phone's gprs. however when thus connected i cannot seem to log on to any instant messaging service even with my firewall off. anybody has any clue? (tmobile carrier)

Any ideas on how I can connect to the internet using a cell phone ? I am
willing to get a new phone since my Motorola V60 is equipped with an
internal mode that has a max connection speed of only 9.6 K.

I recently got an LG VX4500 (Verizon) and have been pretty happy with it.
Verizon doesn't officially support MacOS X, but there's a MacOS X driver
available for the serial-USB cable that comes in Verizon's Mobile Office
Kit ($40) from the "lgvx4500" yahoo group archives. With this, I can use
the phone as a modem for my 12" Powerbook.
