Re: Can of worms?

Here's a naive question (I'm not a Fortran programmer): If XLF
compiles programs for Mac OS X, optimized for the G5, and the OSX/G5
combo can address up to 8 GB of RAM, then why wouldn't a Fortran
program be able to address more than 2 GB of RAM? Is fortran, itself,
limited in that regard? I've been lurking on this newsgroup and
Apple's Fortran newsgroup for many months to get a sense of how
program compiling works, prior to compiling a public domain digital
terrain analysis programs written in Fortran 77 and C. I'll need to
max out the available RAM on my systen and also set up a RAM disk to
minimize run times, so the answer to this question is important to my
work.

And a related question: Since the G5 chip has a 64-bit architecture,
it's my understanding that it can address more than the previous
(32-bit) 4GB limit. Yet I've read at least one other post that
implied that the 4GB limit still applies. Is that true, or was the
poster wrong? And if either the 2GB or 4GB limit applies, how might
this affect access to a RAM disk beyond those limits.

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Jeff
