When we originally tried to buy the IBM compiler, it was darn near
impossible to figure out how to do it based on IBM's website. I don't know
if it's gotten any less confusing. Around the same time, Absoft started
selling XLF and it was a no-brainer to buy it from them, especially since
our procurement system has bought from Absoft before.
I fully agree. On the IBM website you don't see academic/government
prices anywhere, even the commercial rate takes you through many more
steps than neccessary. And in the Netherlands where I live IBM
doesn't sell directly to customers, only through IBM partners. That
adds more layers of beaucracy, especially if you want the academic
version.
Once you get the stuff, it is still worth the trouble though. Fine
pieces of software, XLF and XLC.
kind greets,
Peter
