I'm about to buy the IBM XL C/C++/Fortran compilers, with a nice
academic discount, and I'm unsure of the differences between getting
them from Absoft or straight from IBM.  Absoft appears to throw in a
debugger, and they also seem to license the compiler per machine as
opposed to IBM's practice of licensing per user.  If I went with IBM,
what debugger could I use?  Are there other concerns I should know
about?

I purchased XLF from Absoft. When XLF final was first released, I tried to order it from IBM. I spent about 40 minutes on the phone being transferred about, finally getting to the local educational rep. He didn't even know what XLF was. IBM is not set up to take orders from individuals as near as I can tell.
