You probably are talking about a home machine on broadband (I cannot imagine jpl not being tightly firewalled). I always advise everybody (even if they are on Macs) on broadband to get a cheap hardware NAT firewall (they call them cable DSL/routers in the stores). They can be had from $10 for a wired version and about $30 for a wireless g version in the typical stores and online. This will cut down quite a bit on these hacking attempts. Most of these attempts are automated BTW and originate from worms. As an added bonus, you will be able to simply plug in another computer and have internet access. Very useful addition to your home network.
