One more vote for Keyspan. The drivers work just fine, there is an entry in /dev which points to the Keyspan device.

I can talk directly to these devices through the terminal. No hitches when connecting to remote, home-rolled readout/controller boards with RS-232.

There is no harm you all praising the Keyspan devices, which work perfectly and that we use successfully. But it would be unfair to quote none of its competitors, some of which also work perfectly. The Prolific family is generally cheaper, sometimes much cheaper, than the Keyspan. Off the top of my head I can quote the Bafo BF810 device.
