On this topic, I can share my experiences with Mac/PC drives:
For several years, I've been using a PC-formatted SimpleDrive portable
hard drive on my office PC (www.simpletech.com). I also connect it
to my home iMac through a FireWire port. It's small enough to fit a
briefcase easily, and has a nice zipper case that holds the drive and
cables. It interfaces either with FireWire or USB-2, depending on
which cable is used. Copy speeds are as fast as I get on ethernet-
connected PC backup servers: 1.5 minutes/GByte. Copy speed on my iMac
with FireWire is 3 minutes/GByte (and its a basic G3 running System 9,
almost 3 years old, probably with the slower 400 GHz FireWire).
For backups, I've long used PowerMerge (www.leadertech.com) on my Mac.
I also use SaveNSync(www.peersoftware.com) for the PC, with equal ease.
Both programs skip files that are unchanged, and copy as fast as direct
copying when data transfer is needed. Both duplicate drive contents
in a format that can be used directly as a data source. Both
synchronize multiple disks, including desktop and laptop computers.
Options let the computer to be the "master" to be copied onto backup,
or let the latest version to be the "master" for synchronization, etc.
Regards, BILL
