Scitech mailing list and Apple,

I am in control of some money ($50K not actually mine ) to buy
computers for a group of faculty here. One of the faculty uses Fluent
for his research, which is not available on OS X. I would really just
like to buy G5's so I emailed Fluent and tried to twist their arm a
bit. The short of it is - no such luck for right now. I've attached
the conversation below. Looks like I will have to buy at least half
PC's.

Although I know nothing about Fluent or the platforms on which it is supported, it strikes me that you might have more luck if you encouraged them to look into a port via X11. That is the solution adopted by RSI for porting IDL, and although the resultant port isn't nearly as nice as the fully native IDL they had on OS 9, it is better than nothing. It is my impression that from IDL's point of view, X11 allows them to lump OS X in with all the UNIX variants they support, and the delta necessary to support OS X as YAVU is small.
