I neglected to mention that it [was and/or is] necessary to use a voice that was formerly labelled "Macintalk 3" (for instance: Princess, Junior, Kathy, etc.) and that does not contain "built-in" pitch specification (such as "Pipe-Organ"). The Macintalk Pro voices never did respond correctly to the inline commands I used.
