If you are re-encoding MP1 to MP4, then you will lose sound if the MPEG1 file had its media track muxed (video+audio in a single track). I recommend that you first run your MPEG1 file through a video utility that will "de-mux" the MPEG1 muxed track so that you end up with a new version of the MPEG1 file that contains a separate audio and video track. Then, this should be able to be converted from MPEG1 to MP4 just fine.

Make sure that you are simply using "Movie to Hinted Movie" when
exporting in QT Pro
an MPEG-1 file to be a hinted QuickTime movie.  Otherwise if you are
re-encoding
the file from MPEG-1 (muxed) to some other codec then that might
explain why
were losing the sound.
