Is there a linux based client software that can stream
files from the Darwin streaming server?


Yes, "mplayer" can now do this; see http://www.live.com/mplayer/

(Note, though, that "mplayer" won't be able to play Sorenson video or QDM audio. Also, MPEG-4 is not yet supported. However, MPEG-1 or 2 audio/video (and H.263+video) can be streamed from DSS.)
