I'm not *certain*, but I am using a 2 hour long .mp4 in a playlist loop and when I play that same movie as VOD it has never failed. (But I haven't done extensive testing of that file with VOD.) So I'd say I'm 98% sure.

In the test that I've been running most frequently, it seems to occur between 2 minutes and 30 minutes - with my estimate of the average at 20 minutes. My clients have run tests that have gone for 2 hours before failing (but I'm not 100% sure it is the same failure.)

Since the client thinks the TCP connection is still open and the server thinks it is closed you must close the window and use "Open URL in New Player..." to get it started again. Once you've done that, it fails again after an average of about 20 minutes.

Most (but not all) are going through NAT routers of one make or another. However, I have reproduced the problem with HTTP-encapsulation and no firewall. That same machine played the stream for 68 hours via UDP. (We did suspect NAT at one point...)

eepro100 is Intel EtherExpress Pro 100, a very common adapter. In fact, many (most?) dual-100 mbit rack-mount motherboards use this driver. (The other driver is for RealTek.) Trying a 3Com card would be a good test, but [see below] I think I'm going to stick with my current path.

UPDATE: I have upgraded the Linux kernel to 2.4.9-34smp on one of the problem servers and was able to run my standard test for 1 hour 40 minutes without failure (I had to move the laptop after 1:40.) I and my customer will be doing more testing tonight (on 2 or 3 more servers) and I will report back to the list tomorrow.

Regards,

Sean
