Re: streaming server, firewall ports and netgear firewall

Michael-

I have had nothing but trouble with the Netgear family of routers/firewalls and RTSP/RTP/UDP streams.
Netgear has been unresponsive to these issues, as I have contacted them numerous times.

What I can tell you, is that QuickTime WILL NOT connect using UDP through many of the Netgear routers/firewalls, however RealPlayer WILL. There is some sort of built in RealPlayer exception in their devices. I have tried to configure them manually to pass UDP for QuickTime, to no success. This being said, it will be necessary to connect using HTTP Tunneling in QuickTime, which it should auto negotiate to, at least it does here in our lab.

If anyone else has any insight to the RealPlayer exception in Netgear routers/firewalls, I would be very interested in this information, especially how to solve the QuickTime player issues. I would like to publish this information in our new up and coming Orban Opticodec-PC Technical Manual.

I have the streaming server on OS 10.4.8. It streams within the firewall when
using the server's IP:

  rtsp://192.168.2.30/sample_300kbit.mov

However; when I use an outside URL, it doesn't load:

  rtsp://mac.mydomain.com/sample_300kbit.mov

where "mydomain.com" is the host my outside DNS uses to resolve to the server.
For example. http://mac.mydomain.com resolves to my Mac's Apache web server.

I have tried to open up the inbound/outbound TCP/UPP ports listed in the
Administrator's manual, etc. including:

-to communicate with client 554, 7070 TCP or 80 TCP
-to send media 6970-6999 UDP, or 80 TCP
-used to receive broadcast 10000-65635 UDP
-server will stream through 554 RTSP 7070 TCP or 80 TCP
-port typically used by MP3 broadcasters 8000 TCP

However; this has not worked for streaming outside the LAN.

I have a NetGear FVS114 router.

Can anyone help suggest where to look next?

Thanks,
Michael Welch
