DSS and WMP's RTSP?

Hello,

Newb question here - Windows Media Player from version 9 onwards touts support for RTSP but from what I can tell by looking at the RTSP session between WMP and Darwin Streaming Server, it seems like it is typical MS non-standard bull****. Looks like WMP is expecting some header that it's not getting, or it needs "Server: WMServer/X" or something, so it just terminates the connection after the DESCRIBE response and doesn't play the media.

I have a session dump of a working WMP9/WMS9 RTSP RTP/UDP session that had this SETUP just before the PLAY:

Transport: RTP/AVP/UDP;unicast;client_port=1554;ssrc=fd3ea8a8;mode=PLAY

So it looks like it does support RTP over UDP at least (I dunno about WMP support for interleaved RTP over the RTSP TCP connection for NAT tunneling, or QuickTime-esque HTTP RTP tunneling) if I can get the RTSP setup working right.

Or.. maybe WMP supports the protocol (RTSP) and transport (RTP over UDP) but only like MS container formats? The files I'm trying to stream with DSS can be played locally with WMP with no problem, but I guess that doesn't mean it supports receiving it as a stream. Specs are so hard to find.

Has anyone hacked up DSS to get this to work or can point me to a description of WMP's non-standard RTSP session specs?

No wonder Flash client players have taken off in the last few years, once again MS drops the ball on interoperability.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I've been googling all day and haven't found anything specific, at least not recent since WMP started their "special" RTSP support.

Skye
