packet loss on high bit rate streams

I have same problem. VLC (ver. 0.8.5) play files for ~10sec without
problems and than just drop some packets. VLC message is: ffmpeg debug:
concealing 0 DC, 0 AC, 0 MV errors (h264@02206750). DSS version is 5.5.4. I tried it on Win2003 and also
on Fedora 5 on 2 different PCs and it's same result. Movies are
downloaded from Apple webpage and hinted with Quicktime 7.1.3 Pro. VLC is playing files locally without problems.
I'm trying to solve problem using different encoders but without result.
Any help? Thank You...

P.S. Where can I download old version of DSS to test it?

I'm seeing a significant amount of packet loss with some high bitrate

"playlists" I've created with DSS, and I'm wondering if anyone has

some clue as to what is causing it, and maybe even what I can do to

   fix it :)

The setup is as follows: Server is running DSS 5.6.0 (CVS from a

couple of months ago), on CentOS-4.3, dual 2.8Ghz Xeon, 4x15,000RPM

SCSI disks in RAID10. Clients are using Videolan 0.8.5 mozilla plugin

in Firefox 1.0.8 for playback. Everything is connected over a

   dedicated GigE network.

I have 13 short video clips, ranging from 2-10Mbit/s, each its own

   playlist that loops forever.

On the higher bitrate streams I'm seeing up to 5% packet loss which

   causes jerky playback

Oh dear, that was sent before I was finished :)

Here's the rest of the story:

So up to 5% packet loss which causes jerky playback and can even freeze
the client sometimes, which is really *bad*. The server is at about 20%
CPU utilisation, and the clients at about 20% too during playback. The
network is nowhere near saturation, and the server disks are more than
fast enough to stream the files (unless I'm missing something more
subtle to do with disk tuning like read-ahead, but I don't think so.)
The problem persists even when I turn off all other streams except for
one 10Mbit/s one. I didn't encode the files, a friend did and he's not
the most technically proficient, but they all came from either Final Cut
Pro or iMovie on a Mac, and seem normal when checked out with QTFile
Info. Does anyone have a clue as to what the problem could be? I'm at a
loss here seeing as the usual culprits of bandwidth, cpu ,and disk speed
seem OK.

Cian
