The MS RTSP implementation is, you guess it, an MS implementation

How is that for a politically correct answer?
Well done!
And, just to keep things in the MS family, Windows Media Player
will NOT connect to QTSS/DSS using standards-based RTSP without
some sort of DirectShow Plugin, such as our free AAC/aacPlus
Windows Media Player Plugin:

Thanks, that's sort of what I thought I'd have to do. I'm working
with video, though. I found a commercial video DS plugin by Elecard
here:
http://www.elecard.com/products/products-pc/consumer/avc-streaming- plugin/
Which gives you a new elecard_rtsp:// URL type in WMP. Doesn't work
with the live555MediaServer RTSP test server, but haven't tried it
with DSS yet. Anyway, asking users to pay for something and install
it isn't going to fly for this project, so hopefully I can convince
my corporate overlords to go with a QuickTime Player solution and
ignore WMP.
Seems like a few commercial servers have reverse engineered WMP's
special RTSP but kept the details a secret.
