You can source multicast MP3 streams using the RTP protocol.  The
company I work for has 3 such channels.  If you browse the SDP
announcements there are several others as well.

The standard MPEG-Audio payload type is 14, though Ross Finlayson has
done work to improve this.
See RFC 2250 and RFC 3319.

Currently DSS won't stream these.


FYI, for software to stream MP3 via multicast, try "liveCaster" <http://www.live.com/liveCaster/>. (This program reads regular ".mp3" files - they don't need to be 'hinted' or anything.

Quicktime won't play them either, though this is a known bug.

I'm hoping that Apple will fix this bug soon (in a future release of QuickTime player). In the meantime, several other players can be used to play MP3/RTP streams - see <http://www.live.com/liveCaster/receiving.html> for examples.
