Way around initial localhost setup (was: How to login to Public Preview #2)

There is a way around having to configure the machine on localhost:

1. Log in into your QTSS server machine (telnet, ssh, whatever) as root
2. Edit qtgroups and change the admin username from "aGFja21l" to one of your choice.
3. Use the "qtpasswd" utility to add the username from step 2 to your qtusers file.
4. Delete the index.html file from your AdminHtml directory (in /Library/QuickTimeStreaming/, /var/streaming/, or c:\Program Files\Darwin Streaming Server\)

Now you can connect to your server from another machine on port 1220, and use the username and password you supplied qtpasswd.

Since manually deleting the index.html file "tricks" QTSS Admin into thinking it's already run the Setup Assistant, you can re-run the Setup Assistant by going to:

http://server.addr:1220/parse_xml.cgi?filename=setup_assistant

although most of the settings in the Setup Assistant are available in General Settings anyway.

Hope this info helps.

Mythili,

Do I understand correctly that this is the *only* way to set it up initially? I run it on a headless Linux server, which makes this a bit difficult.

Might there be another way where I won't have to pull that box out of the closet and set up X and a monitor just to bootstrap the DSS config?

Once you install PP#2, you need to login from a browser on the local machine. Try http://127.0.0.1:1220/ or http://localhost:1220/ from the *same* machine that you installed the server on. Once you successfully run the setup assistant and set your admin username and password, then you can login remotely.

Hope this clears up any confusion. And, sorry for making this process so confusing. Allowing only local loopback address connections before the setup assistant is successfully run is a security feature, since we don't want anyone to connect to your machine before you set it up.
