Hello,
I'm streaming a 1.5Mb/s movie (Shrek trailer, Sorenson) using DSS 3.0.1
(official release, or 3.0.1-v349) on a W2K server, reliable_udp enabled, on
a 100Mb network (no other traffic). Playing the movie with QT 5.0.2, all
goes well, up to 15 secs buffer. I pause the movie, wait a couple seconds,
restart it. From then on, the player (running on a Pentium III/ 1GHz, W2K)
never gets it right again: the picture hangs every 1-2 seconds, shows ugly
compression problems. Looking at the statistics, the used bandwidth is a
monster roller coaster (it was flat at 2Mb before), the packet loss goes
wild (up to 50%) and the buffer time never reaches more than 3 secs.
What gives ??!! Switching reliable udp off ruins the picture every time
we hit fast action, so it's not an option. As a side question, how come
using the default configuration for the server does not work properly under
good conditions?
Also, where is the documentation for all those fancy options you can set
in the streamingserver.xml file ??? Can anyone send me a description/usage
for each of them?
Hints, pointers, anyone ?
PS: this is not a taunt, but under the exact same conditions (same server,
same client, same network), the Real server/client work without a hitch, no
packet loss, no hickups, no nothing, either with the same movie (at a third
of the bandwidth) or with a 3Mb/s movie. This just to say that it obviously
isn't a network or hardware problem.
