Re: Streaming Server H/W and S/W

Start here:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qtss/

From this site you will find hardware and software requirements, 'Services'
has links to all kinds of services surrounding QuickTime and streaming, the
downloadable QTSS package includes documentation which reviews bandwidth
requirements.... hopefully that info is available elsewhere on the site as
well. A search through the archives on this list would also undoubtedly
yield much info on bandwidth requirement calculations as well.

That should get you started. Basically, you want a machine with lots of
RAM, that's important. It all really depends on how many clients you intend
to stream to at one time. You don't need OS X Server, but that's the only
platform on which Apple supports QTSS. QTSS however, runs fine on OS X
Client. DSS (the open source, but functionally equivalent version of the
server) also runs on many other *nix-based operating systems, and even
Win2000 I think.

If you plan to stream to many clients and you can afford it, I would suggest
one of the hosting services. This negates your need for all the bandwidth
and hardware. Some level of support is then usually included, also.

Hope that helps,
