3. I create a simple file -- linkimage.mov
rtsptext rtsp://IL93-1093/blinddate1.mov
4. The html pages comes up with the QuickTime symbol, which I click on.
But before playing the movie blinddate1, it plays the sample movie.
5. If I don't click on anything, after invoking the html page, it plays the
sample movie only.
What could be causing the sample movie to play on both IE 6.0 and Netscape
6.1?

If I'm understanding correctly, your "linkimage.mov" is made out of a rtsptext file. If this is correct, that movie references the rtsp URL. So when you embed that movie it will request and play the rtsp media you are referencing.

So what you need to do is put some sort of media in the "linkimage.mov" file. For example, you can create that movie with a single JPEG or even just a text track.

Try this:

In QT Player Pro open a JPEG or GIFF and save as a "Self Contained" movie. This will be your "linkimage.mov".

Then you can use the embed tag just as you posted it.

Also you should use the object tag as explained in the Apple site, just to make sure the ActiveX control is downloaded by those that don't have it installed:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/tutorials/activex.html

This won't fix the problem you're asking about, but it will avoid other issues under IE 5.5 SP2 and IE 6.
