Re: Dedicated Ethernet card

Having a second ethernet card would be great if it would allow you
to have more dedicated bandwidth (just for streaming). In other
words, if your other services would still be sharing the 2Mbit/s
bandwidth, then there really is no advantage to having multiple
ethernet cards.

However, if you are able to increase the amount of dedicated bandwidth
so that your QTSS ethernet card would be sharing a different/separate
2Mbit/s pipe, in addition to a separate 2Mbit/s network connection
that your other services are using, then that sounds like a good plan.

Otherwise, if you're just going to plug the QTSS Ethernet card into
the same switch and share your maximum 2Mbit/s bandwidth, then there
really is no bandwidth/performance advantage to having independent
ethernet cards.

The real advantage is if your machine is multihomed across two or
more network segments where each segment had dedicated bandwidth.

One thing that you DO want to consider though is that if you
plan to run Apache (port 80) as well as QTSS (ports 80 & 554),
then you will want to setup IP aliasing and then edit the Apache
conf settings to bind to your main IP address, and then edit
the /etc/streaming/streamingserver.xml file and have it bind
to your secondary IP address.

This will avoid the port 80 conflict between the two services.

Having more than one Ethernet card does simplify this a little
since you can use the Network control panel to configure both
ethernet cards/addresses separately. However, you will still
need to get down and hand-edit both the Apache config and
QTSS .xml files, for them to bind to their respective IP
addresses only.
