MPEG-7 Overview
Context
> Multimedia Content Description Interface
> An ISO standard by MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group)
> International Standard - due out in Sept. 2001
> MPEG-1, MPEG-2 - Compression Codecs
> MPEG-4 Interactivity, Features, Layers, some metadata, compression - not
just
> video and audio
> MPEG-7 Metadata, independent of compression codecs.
>> making MPEG-7 the metadata standards to work with all other types of mpeg
and
>> other codecs and media types
MPEG-7 Objectives
Standardize Content-Based description of audiovisual information
descriptions can be stored:
-separately via xml
-multiplexed on top of streams
-embedded within content headers e.g. MPEG-4, PNG
and consists of:
> bibliographic
> semantic
> structural
> features (colours, shapes, motion, pitch etc.)
metadata
Enable fast, efficient searching and filtering of multimedia content
Address a wide range of applications
Describe images, audio, video, graphics, 3D models, compositions, multimedia
Be independent of storage, coding, display, transmission, medium, or
technology
Discussion
MPEG-7 at the lens
timing was discussed of the likelihood of an MPEG-7 camera being released
within the year - no conclusion was reached except that when one was
available Doug Macleod would be interested in acquiring it.
Graphic search tool was demonstrated and other work at Columbia university
was discussed including facial recognition, motion analysis, and video
skimming.

Opportunities to begin working with the metadata from a semantic and
bibliographic point of view were discussed as to be currently possible and
worthwhile. A joint project between BELLE, Netera, Learning Commons and
faculties such as Medicine and Kinesiology is under way that will use MPEG-7
metadata to allow the annotation of video, images, and audio with text and
graphics - Learning Object Hub.
More advanced machine-based analysis using the MPEG-7 specification was also
discussed as it could be applied to work such as Joan Vickers in
Kinesiology. Opportunities to attract research funding and participate in
projects that can take advantage of emerging technologies in analysis to
benefit both research and learning required more interest from faculty
members. If anybody is interested they may want to contact Trevor Doerksen
or Mike Mattson of the Learning Commons.
Next discussion groups
Suggestion to hold next session on location - anybody like to host?
Hold session on video conferencing NETERA and Learning Commons.
Hold session on the Learning Object Hub.
Please send suggestions.
Watch for announcements.
October9s Discussion Group is cancelled. Next session November 7, more
information to follow.
