Streaming .avi file with Darwin

Greetings!

I just set up a Linux version of Darwin Steam Server and all
sample files work fine. My question is with my video file with .avi
extension.

It was created with VirualDub with DivX MPEG-4 LowMotion
codec and the file can be played by RealOne Player and MS Media Player.

But I get the "unknown compressor" error when I play it with
QuickTime 6.0.

If I streaming it through Darwin Streaming Server, I got three different
error from three different media players, using the same url:
rtsp://server/test.avi.

QuickTime: "Unsupported Media Type"

RealOne: "Requested File Not Found"

MS Media Player: "the server received invalid data from the client on
the control connection"

It seems that Darwin Server is not streaming the video files with .AVI
extension. How do I convert it to .MP4 extension file or .MOV file?

From VirtualDub I can see a list of CODECs

                        Cinepak

                        DivX;-) MPEG-4 Fast Motion

                        DivX;-) MPEG-4 Low Motion

                        DivX Pro 5.0.2 Codec

                        Indeo video 5.10

                        Intel 4:2:0 Video V2.50

                        Intel IndeoR Video R3.2

                        Microsoft H.261 Video Codec

                        Microsoft H.263 Video Codec

                        Microsoft RLE

                        Microsoft Video

Which of these should I use to create my video file to be
most storage-efficient, work with the Darwin Streamer, and viewable by
most of the players?

            Thank you very much!
