Prices are list prices from HP and Apple online stores. The HP prices are
often discounted if you buy from a VAR and Apple prices are also discounted
if you negotiate a company discount with Apple.
That's an $1800 difference PER SERVER just for the hardware. It's my
understanding (I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong), that you need
to spend another $999 per server for the unlimited users OSX license
to use it for a big honkin' streaming server. If you wanted to spend
$4-5k per server on the HP, you could upgrade the box to a quad-core
2.2ghz opteron @ $4667, though that comes with 2gb RAM and 36gig 15k rpm
SCSI rather than 1gb RAM and SATA drive though.
However, we use both architectures here so I'm really just interested in
actual benchmarks for streaming servers running on similar hardware. I'm
really NOT interested in a pc vs apple catfight...especially since it's
all going to effectively be the same thing in another year anyway. So,
again, if anyone has benchmarked similarly configured Linux boxes with DSS
vs Xserves with QTSS I'd love to hear from you.
Telling my CEO I'm buying a pile of Xboxes because they look cooler isn't
going to cut the mustard. $1800 times 20-30 systems is a lot of green.
8-)
Cheers,
