You can download a free evaluation copy of Wirecast (watermarks the stream). That's a great way to evaluate it for yourself.

Wirecast is a streaming studio in software with sophisticated layering, support for multiple inputs, support for multiple encodes, etc. On the Mac, Wirecast takes advantage of the Quartz graphics engine and offloads processing to the GPU. They also just released a Windows version of the product. I have seen some very professionally produced live events with Wirecast. On the Mac it is fully scriptable, so some of my customers are integrating it into custom workflows. It is a professional webcasting tool and certainly deserves consideration.
