Well, one simple way to is view / listen to the stream in Quicktime, open
properties (command J on the Mac,), select streaming track, select statistics.


You will get a cool set of plots including packet loss.

OR, if you are streaming using RTP, you can use RTPdump / RTPqual (google) to get all kinds of
info. I use this all the time on multicast, but I think it works for unicast too.
