Benchmarking dual G5 vs dual Xeon/Opteron (anyone done it?)

I'm in a situation where I'm going to have to deploy a fair number
of streaming servers. I have primarily done production streaming
with Real/Helix streaming servers in the past and have been
contemplating adding support for quicktime streaming. We've been
using DSS in a lab environment on single and dual processor
Linux machines with quite a bit of success and have also been
doing some testing on a dual 2.7ghz G5 with QTSS and tiger.

Has anyone on the list done a (horrible pun?) Apples to Oranges
benchmark for similarly configured (other than G5 vs iX86) servers?

Money isn't really an issue here, but I can't help but feel
nervous about ordering a bunch of Xserves when I know that Apple
is in the midst of another processor "phase change". Having gotten
stuck in the middle during the 680x0-->PPC change, I just don't want
to go through that again. However, if there is a genuine performance
advantage to sticking with QTSS and the G5 platform, I'm all ears.

This is for an environment that will have to support several to
many tens of thousands of simultaneous broadband connections.

Any suggestions or pointers towards real world benchmarks or
case studies would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Chris
