We have WiMax here in Colombia, it definitely works but is just another technology, not a revolution (at least at the moment). Here you receive a kind of modem (like an aDSL one) that you can connect to your computer by the network card and it gives you the internet access without dialing, however the wimax modem lacks of two important things:
1) it has no usb2 or power over ethernet, so your computer (even a laptop) will be stuck near the electric power supply.
2) if you move the wimax modem it can lose the signal and restart the connection, like any other wireless technology it gets different signal levels in different parts of the house and the city, in some places you will have a slower internet or no internet at all
The advantage is that you can pack the wimax modem with your laptop, travel and reconnect it, of course you have to be in the wimax coveraged area.
I have searched for wimax pcmcia cards or usb modems, but no luck
