Referring to the "QuickTime Streaming Guide:" (Item 2 in the list of documents at http://developer.apple.com/documentation/QuickTime/Streaming-date.html).

Page 21 of 58:
Streaming movies only play back at a rate of 1. Other playback rates, such as playing backward, are not supported.

Does this restriction still hold true? I'm hoping that there have since been enhancements to QTSS/Darwin, that allow for movies to be streamed at different speeds and also backwards. Could someone please confirm?
