Re: VBR vs CBR

I think it depends on how much "V" you have in the VBR.
What are you using for encoding software?
We have several packages here, it seems Episode provides the most control over VBR.
We use that successfully at 600-700 kbps or so streaming data rate, but I have not tried others yet.

You may want to use a tool like MovieVideoChart to see how much variation you have

I don't think VBR per se is the problem, the problem is that if the playback buffer is empty, due to large continuous spikes in data rate, the movie will stutter until the data catches up to the network bottleneck.

It also seems that one-pass encoding has some VBR built-in these days, in most encoding packages, though not as much as 2-pass. This may be good enough in many cases, except the usual "codec busters".

BTW, anyone out there using VBR encoding with DSS for video on demand?
I had a lot of problems last time I tried using 2-pass H.264. --audio
sync and breakup I believe were the problems encountered. I am
wondering if I should revisit it or not.
