Well, not to promote the idea of everyone going free, but to tone down the
rhetoric of both sides:
1) I thought Apple quoted over 1000 student members a year ago, so
"most" is a misnomer at the very least!
2) Free passes to all ADC student members on this list might meet you both
halfway, but what makes that any more fair - it's just another arbitrary
grouping, and then everyone would join the list the year after anyway.

That said, considering how competetive the scholarship is now, I'd say
Apple needs more than ever to do something else, such as allow us to buy
cheap passes, or otherwise open entry. I really don't know why in this
most competetive year to date (until next year), they stopped offering the
student discount. Then again, there are those that couldn't go even if
they wished b/c travel is so expensive for them, if not the $100 to join.
I know students who decide between books and food (and spend time using
the reserve copy of texts in the library whenever it's an option), so
think twice before assuming everyone has even a "mere" $100 laying around
for something like ADC membership.

Of course, the idea of as student paying to travel *AND* paying more than
a couple hundred dollars to get in is already ludicrous, so I guess,
those in CA are "luckier" than others who also get free passes in Europe,
who are then luckier than those who didn't get a pass at all, who are at
least luckier (only for the lack of being so close, yet so far) than those
who got a free pass and had to give it up for whatever reason...

In the end, it's just another dose of reality. Some win, some lose, some
work harder than others and get less, and some are just born with more,
and in the end, it's all arbitrary anyway and there's bigger things in the
world to worry about if you have the time to care at all. So, unless your
daddy's a generous millionaire, it's time to get used to it.
