I tested some more, and...

even if I close the read-ends of the pipe that I will not read out, before I do anything after fork(), it doesn't work. It also doesn't work when I forget about using stdin and stdout in the child completely, but do a direct read() in the child to read from the parent instead, like you are doing in your example. That still doesn't work....
