This doesn't actually work the way you state it. The latter file will
work for "Aqua" apps that actually use environment variables (not many
do), but not for command line apps that come from the Unix world.
As for ".profile", it doesn't automatically work. Please read the
manual page for the shells in question to see what actually happens as
the shell starts up.
